Jamaica's treble Olympic and world champion insisted that it was only the late scheduling of the Games - which are due to open on October 3 - which prevented him from taking part.

He told today's Times of India: "It would have been really nice as I haven't competed in the Commonwealth Games before but the timing was all wrong for me as I need to get ready for the World Championships in 2011 [in Daegu] and Olympic Games in 2012.

"Those two events are very important and all athletes focus on them.

"It is crucial that we remain in peak shape for them.

"I am really sorry that I can't make it this time."

Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of Delhi's Organising Committee, had claimed that Bolt would definitely compete in the Games.

But Bolt denied that he had felt under pressure to run.

He said: "I wouldn't say there was any pressure.

"In fact, I wasn't thinking about it. It was up to my coach to make the decision based on what is best for my career.

"I am sure he made the right decision."
