October 3 - Prince Charles and wife Camilla paid a visit to the controversial Commonwealth Games Village here, speaking with athletes and delegates, just hours before he will open the Commonwealth Games at a glittering Opening Ceremony at the 60,000 capacity Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.



The Prince, who will declare the event open in front of millions of television viewers around the world, was surrounded by an army of security personnel during his visit to the Village and will be under heavy guard throughout his stay in India.

An official of the Delhi 2010 Organising Committee said: "The prince arrived here at 10.20am and stayed for about one-and-a-half hours.

"He took a walk across the Village, including the international zone, and was pleased with the preparations."

The Royal couple arrived in New Delhi yesterday and were received by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi before being whisked from the airport to meet with Indian President Pratibha Patil at the luxurious Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Official Residence of the Head of the State.

The Commonwealth Games are set have unprecedented levels of security for a major sporting event while the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium has been locked down this weekend following the final dress rehearsal on Friday (October 1).

Around 5,000 police personnel have been posted to the stadium and other measures have seen snipers and commandos deployed to the area.

Army units have also been put on standby while there are set to be lengthy delays for spectators getting in and out of the main stadium to watch the Opening Ceremony due to security checks.
