May 23 - Tickets for the Commonwealth Games, which is due to open in New Delhi on October 3, are set to go on sale next month, it has been announced.

Nearly two million tickets for 17 sports will be avaialble over the internet and at 50 outlets of the Central Bank and Hero Honda.

Some tickets will be priced as low as 50 rupees (£0.75/$1).

Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the Delhi organising committee, said: "Around 1.7 million tickets will be sold for the Games starting from October 3.

"These tickets will be initially available only from a dedicated call centre, the Commonwealth Games 2010 website and a few select outlets."

Kalmadi predicted a steady purchase of tickets when they go on sale on June 1 but that as the Games approach there will be a massive rush.

He said: "Availability will be the prime concern, as we expect demand to go up once the Queen's Baton Relay goes through the country, and more people get to know about the Commonwealth Games."

The Baton Relay is due to enter India on June 25, from neighbouring Pakistan at the Wagah border, and will travel 20,000 kilometres around the country.

Officials plan to keep tickets on sale for each event until they sell-out.

Kalmadi said: "These tickets will be available till the start of each event."
