May 26 - The strong corporate backing for Annecy's bid to host the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics has been underlined with the signing of Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR), a hydropower electricity company, as its latest official partner.

Annecy hopes the deal with CNR, which sells 100 per cent renewable energy, is closely associated with the River Rhône where it is involved in hydroelectric production, improving navigation and other agricultural, will help reinforce their green credentials.

Edgar Grospiron, the chief executive of Annecy 2018, said: "We share the same values as the CNR tied to sustainable development and saving the environment.

"Their concept capitalises on existing sites, encourages group and new means of transportation, and high quality environment requirements."

Jean-Pierre Vidal, the 2002 Olympic slalom champion who is now the chairman of the Annecy 2018 Sustainable Development Adivsory Group, said: "Annecy 2018 naturally places environmental stakes at the heart of the bid and has committed to Games with a positive carbon footprint."

Christian Monteil, the chairman of the Annecy 2018 Supervisory Board and President of the Haute-Savoie General Council, claimed that the involvement of CNR showed that France supports their bid, which faces strong opposition from Munich and Pyeongchang.

CNR join a list of backers that also includes EDF and Orange.

Monteil said: "Backing for the bid from the business world is a strong pillar of our project and reinforces the credibility of our approach."
