March 28 - Scotland's Eve Muirhead suffered the heartbreak of being beaten tonight in the final of the World Curling Championships in Swift Current by Germany's Andrea Schopp (pictured).

Schopp beat Muirhead's rink  8-6 after an in an extra end in the gold-medal final to lift the title for first time in 22 years - three years before the Scottish teenager was even born.

Schopp, who was making her 17th appearance at the World Championship, won Germany's first world title in Glasgow in 1988.

She shared in that victory with second Monika Wagner.

Tonight, Schopp, Melanie Robillard, Wagner and Corinna Scholz celebrated German's second title after a nose hit for two in the 10th end.

Schopp, 45, is believed to be the oldest skip to capture a women's title since the event started in 1979.

Tonight's final was Schopp's first appearance in the gold-medal match since winning the world title.

Schopp struck first in the opening end with a single point.

Muirhead and her rink of Kelly Wood, Lorna Vevers and Anne Laird scored two in the second end and Schopp bounced with a deuce of her own in the third end.

The teams traded points in the fourth and fifth ends.

Schopp went into the break leading 4-3.

In the sixth end, Muirhead scored two to take a 5-4 advantage.

Schopp picked up one in the seventh end after a routine takeout.

She stole one in the eighth end when Muirhead's attempted double take out jammed and assumed a 6-5 lead.

Schopp appeared to have the match won in the 10th end after Muirhead's first shot picked up some debris and raised in two German counters.

Muirhead got herself out of the end with a miraculous triple raise takeout to score one.

Earlier today, Canada's Jennifer Jones won bronze, defeating Sweden's Cecilia Ostlund 9-6.
